Many of us have parents, aunts or uncles who have become digital whether they wanted to or not. The bank, the healthcare portal, the pension, the photos of the grandchildren and the chat with the family. Everything sits in a phone and behind a login.<\/p>\n
And when something goes wrong, it goes badly wrong. A forgotten password, a phone dropped in the sea, a scam call from someone pretending to be the bank. Suddenly they are locked out of their own life.<\/p>\n
So here is my Christmas advice: spend an afternoon with them before the holidays.<\/p>\n
Make sure every important account has recovery options that work: a current phone number and email, and recovery codes printed and stored safely at home. Turn on MFA, preferably with the phone\u00b4s built in features or passkeys, so they don\u00b4t need to type codes. Set up a trusted contact for account recovery where the service supports it.<\/p>\n
Turn on backup of the phone, including photos and messages, and check that it actually runs. Write down, on paper, which phone, which accounts and where the recovery codes are, and keep it with their other important papers.<\/p>\n
And talk about scams. Tell them that the bank will never call and ask them to log on, and that it is always okay to hang up and call you.<\/p>\n
